Factors to consider when searching for a program

Career opportunities

Before you begin to apply for a specific program, read the brochures and talk to students in that program at an open house or during a campus tour. Make sure that the program interests you and lines up with your career path!

Do any of your family members or friends know someone in the career or field you're interested in? Can you ask them about a typical day for them? What advice do they have for you that can help you make the right choice? Do the programs you’re looking for offer internships or co-op so you can try different careers and build your network?

Earnings potential

Fortunately, university is about so much more than getting a job after you graduate. However, you may want to research more into earnings potential for your field of interest, and ponder whether job opportunities in that field are growing or stagnant. Something you should consider is a six-figure salary may not be worth it if you're not happy in your job. I personally would prefer to work in a non-profit, rather than live the corporate lifestyle.

Choose a program with specialization after first year

There are programs that allow for flexibly after first year, which is important because it will give you time to learn about your area of specialization. Take time in your first year to talk to your professor and other students. Why? To learn what others are doing and interesting and competitive options. Take electives in other units you enjoy.
