Recognition of Prior Learning

The Ministry of Education, Kenya on 22nd March 2024 launched the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) policy by graduating over 800 RPL graduates at a ceremony presided over by His Execellence Rigathi Gachagua, Deputy President of the Republic of Kenya. It was a milestone for Kenya to witness a 60 year old welding practioner obtain a certification at Kenya National Qualifications Framework (KNQF) level 6 (Diploma) for exhibiting knowledge and demonstrating skills and competence to certify an award at that level. Apprentice and other non-formal methods of skills development have been recognized as pathway for acquisition of knowledge and skills in Kenya. An applicant for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is guided on the skills level to apply for assessment and the acceptance evidence to support acquisition of knowledge and skills. Kenya has 10 levels of qualifications that reflect the skills and level of competences. The highest level is Kenya National Qualifications Framework (KNQF)10 equivalent to doctorate degree. An individual at this level should possess advanced skills in research, critical thinking, problem-solving, and project management. A holder of diploma qualification equivalent to KNQF 6 possess practical skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in their chosen career paths, whether in technical roles, administrative positions, or other fields requiring specialized expertise. A holder of artisan qualification equivalent to KNQF 4 typically possess a combination of technical skills, practical knowledge, and craftsmanship expertise essential for various trades and vocational occupations such as construction, manufacturing, maintenance, repair, and other sectors where hands-on craftsmanship and technical proficiency are valued. In the Kenyan context RPL certification is a scheme to reward those skilled craft men who acquired expert skills through experiential learning and contribute to increased production, excellent service and prosperity creation through expertise skills. RPL certification benefit applicant by raising their self-esteem, sense of belonging and opportunities for increased earnings. Currently RPL assessments are conducted at Technical and Vocational Education and Technical-Curriculum Development Assessment Certification Curriculum, Nyeri National Polytechnic, Kitale National Polytechnic and National Industrial Training Authority.
